The Catholic Alternative to Spotify.

"We're not building another Catholic corner of the internet. We're building the streaming infrastructure the Catholic world deserves."

— WILL HICKL, CO-FOUNDER & CEO

Fio At A Glance

Fio is a Catholic-exclusive audio streaming platform created to be the best place to find Catholic music, podcasts, and audiobooks in one place. Founded in 2023 by Will Hickl and Peter Buonincontro, Fio was built to solve a problem that every Catholic creator and listener eventually runs into: the platforms that distribute most Catholic content were not built for it, are not aligned with it, and in many cases place it alongside content that is offensive or contrary to the Faith.

The platform is available on iOS, Android, and web, and serves a growing international user base across 100+ countries. Its library includes over 100,000 hours of content from more than 1,000 Catholic creators across music, podcasts, and audiobooks. Admission to the platform is limited to practicing Catholics whose work is informed by the Catholic faith, regardless of style or topic. Fio pays music streaming royalties at rates roughly three to five times higher than Spotify, and is the first platform in the industry to pay streaming royalties for podcast content.

The Fio Story

The Catholic Church has always been at the forefront of the arts. For centuries it commissioned the music, funded the painters, and gave artists both a patron and a purpose. That tradition never disappeared, but somewhere along the way the infrastructure that supported it did. Over the past two decades that began to change. Catholics embraced the tools of the digital age and answered a call to bring the ideas, beauty, and excellence of the faith into the world through new forms. A handful of those efforts broke through and reached the wider culture. Most got lost in the noise, never found their audience, and lacked the resources to continue.

Will Hickl was one of those Catholics who stepped up to create. A musician and founder of the Catholic record label NOVUM RECORDS, he ran into the same walls that stop most Catholic creators short of their potential. Secular platforms were not built for this work. They offer no way to surface it, no fair compensation for the people making it, and no community around it. Working with artists at the label made that picture harder to look away from. It was through that work that Will began collaborating with Peter Buonincontro, a product designer and brand builder who had grown convinced through his own career that the way the secular world approached the arts was fundamentally at odds with the Catholic understanding of creativity as something ordered toward truth and beauty. They were looking at the same problem from different sides. If the Church was going to reclaim its place at the forefront of the arts, Catholic creativity needed a platform built on its own values, one not pulled in the direction of the broader entertainment industry and its incentives. Together they set out to build it.

The Name

Fio is Latin for "I become." The name echoes St. John Paul II's call to young people to "become what you are" — an invitation to grow into the fullness of who God made them to be. The platform was built on the belief that Catholic content does more than entertain: it is a form of co-creating with God, and a formative act for everyone who makes it.

Fio = “I am made” or “I become”

FEE-oh | Latin | first person form of the verb Fieri.

HOW WE VET CATHOLIC CONTENT

Every creator on Fio goes through a review process before their content is made available on the platform. New creator submissions are manually reviewed by the Fio team, and every creator must affirm the following before their content is accepted:

  • Practicing Catholic — creators affirm their belief in the Holy Eucharist as the real presence of Jesus Christ and profess the Nicene and Apostles Creeds in their entirety, and recognize the teaching authority of the Catholic Church in matters of faith and morals

  • Human creativity — using generative AI for the majority of the creative process is against Fio's content policy. Creators affirm their work was not primarily created using artificial intelligence

  • Ongoing standards — content that does not meet Fio's standards may be removed at any time

“Keeping my eyes on heaven”

"Fio is my favorite way to consume Catholic podcasts and other content because it doesn't have distractions that will pull my mind down a rabbit hole. Instead of spending time listening to something that has nothing to do with my faith, I can keep my focus on the Lord as I clean, work out, and drive. This app is also a great way to discover new Catholic speakers and podcasts I didn't know existed. We have such a rich faith that I'm learning to appreciate more every day."

— POTSie Princess

"A review from a director of youth ministries"

"I tell my students it's like a Catholic Spotify — so whatever podcast you get on here is going to be Catholic information only, and you don't have to wonder about the true source. This is the app I refer so many of my students to so they can explore a large range of subjects for free."

Ekoerner, Director of Youth Ministries
